1. Create one shop and a cash method
Open the Point of Sale app. If the database has no shop yet, Odoo 19 shows cards for business types. Choose the closest card, or go to Point of Sale → Configuration → Settings and use New Shop.
Give the shop its own cash payment method and cash journal. Odoo’s workflow guide calls this out so the accounting entries stay traceable to that shop. Add one product with a sales price and confirm it is available in the shop before you open the register.
2. Open the register with a counted float
- Go to Point of Sale → Dashboard.
- On the shop card, click Open Register.
- Enter the opening cash amount that is actually in the drawer.
- Click Open Register again. The card then shows Continue Selling instead of Open Register.
The person who opens the register needs Point of Sale access that allows opening a session. An employee without a database user can sell only after a database user has opened the register.
3. Sell one product and take payment
- Click the product. It moves into the cart.
- Click Payment, choose the cash method, and enter the amount if Odoo does not fill it.
- Click Validate.
- Print or email the receipt, then start the next order.
Expected: the order is paid, the receipt matches the product and amount, and the drawer contains the opening cash plus that payment. These labels follow the Odoo 19 POS workflow.
4. Close and compare the drawer
- Open the register menu and choose Close Register.
- Review the orders and the expected amount for each payment method.
- Count the cash and enter it. Odoo can fill the expected amount for you, but a first close is more useful if you type the count you made.
- Close the register and confirm the session no longer stays open on the dashboard.
Close the register at the end of the day. An open session mixes the next morning’s cash with today’s sales, which makes the next difference harder to explain.
5. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a customer for a cash sale?
No. Odoo’s POS workflow lets you pay without a customer. Add a customer when you need an invoice, a pricelist, or loyalty points.
What if the counted cash does not match?
Odoo shows a payments-difference step. You can restrict how large a difference a user may close by setting a maximum difference in the POS payment settings.
Can the register sell while the internet is down?
Odoo 19 documents an offline mode that keeps selling with data already loaded in the browser. Do not close or reload that browser until the session is online again, or orders stored only in the browser can be lost.
