Setup and planning

Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, or your own server

The same Odoo apps behave differently once you need a custom module, a staging copy, or a backup you can restore yourself. Pick the host from those requirements.

1. Start from the work, not the logo

Answer three questions before comparing prices or server sizes.

  • Do you need a custom module, or only the standard apps and configuration?
  • Do you need a staging copy before a change reaches daily users?
  • Who must be able to download a backup and prove a restore?

If the answers are “standard apps,” “no custom code,” and “Odoo can operate the platform,” Online is the usual start. Custom code points to Odoo.sh or a server you run.

2. Compare the three hosts

On small screens, scroll the table sideways to see every column.

Community and Enterprise are a separate choice. A self-hosted server can run either edition you are licensed to use. Odoo.sh is for a subscription that includes that platform. Check the current offer with Odoo before you sign, because packaging changes.

3. Choose and write down the owner

  1. Pick Online when the business can work with standard apps and Odoo’s update schedule.
  2. Pick Odoo.sh when developers will ship custom modules and you want staging branches without running the servers.
  3. Pick your own server when you must control the network, the update window, or where the database lives, and you can staff backups and security.
  4. Name the person who approves an update and the person who runs a restore test.

Expected: a one-page decision that says the host, the edition, and who restores a failed change. The implementation plan can then use that decision instead of revisiting it in every meeting.

4. Frequently asked questions

Is Odoo Online the same product as Odoo.sh?

No. Online is Odoo’s hosted service for standard databases. Odoo.sh is the platform for a project that uses your own code, branches, and staging builds.

Can I move later?

Yes, with a planned migration. A backup from one host still needs a compatible Odoo version and the same custom modules on the destination. Moving is a project, not a button that keeps every integration untouched.

Does self-hosting include backups?

Only if you configure them. On Online and Odoo.sh, Odoo operates the platform backups described in its hosting documentation. On your own server, backup, restore tests, and updates are yours.
