How to install Odoo 19 on Ubuntu

Use Odoo’s Ubuntu package when you want a service on a server you control. The package installs the Community application and expects PostgreSQL on the same machine.

1. Install PostgreSQL first

Odoo’s packaged installer documentation says a PostgreSQL server is required. On Debian or Ubuntu, the package expects PostgreSQL on the same host. Install it before Odoo:

sudo apt install postgresql -y

Confirm sudo works for the account you are using. Odoo also documents that wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 has to be installed separately when you need PDF headers and footers. The pip package is not the documented way to install it.

2. Install Odoo 19 Community from the nightly repository

Odoo publishes this repository setup for the Community edition. Run it on the server as a user who can use sudo:

wget -q -O - https://nightly.odoo.com/odoo.key | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/odoo-archive-keyring.gpg
echo 'deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/odoo-archive-keyring.gpg] https://nightly.odoo.com/19.0/nightly/deb/ ./' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/odoo.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install odoo

Odoo notes that nightly packages can be awkward to keep current. Later updates use apt-get upgrade. Read the Odoo 19 packaged installers page again before you copy these commands onto a new release.

3. Open the service and create a database

  1. Confirm the service is running. The package starts Odoo as a service.
  2. On the server, open http://localhost:8069. From another computer, use the server’s address only if the firewall allows it.
  3. Create a database with an administrator login you can store safely. This login is the first user password, not the PostgreSQL role password.
  4. Install one app you actually need, such as Sales or Invoicing, and confirm the home menu opens.

Expected: the database is listed, you can sign out and sign in again, and the service is still running after a reboot. Take a backup before you add custom modules. The Windows guide is a separate path for a local developer machine.

4. Frequently asked questions

Which Ubuntu release does the Odoo 19 package support?

Odoo’s 19.0 package documentation says the deb package supports Ubuntu Noble 24.04 LTS. Check the current package page before using another release.

Does this install Enterprise?

The nightly repository command below installs Community. Enterprise packages are downloaded from an Odoo account that is allowed to receive them.

Is a package the same as a production deployment?

The package gives you a running service. Production still needs backups, updates, a firewall, HTTPS, and a tested restore. Those are separate steps.
