How to invoice an Odoo down payment

A down payment invoice is only the amount you asked for now. The rest of the order stays open.

Part of a complete guide

This task is one section of Odoo sales, website, and service: seven everyday tasks, with 6 related tasks on one page.

1. Confirm the order

Create a sales order with one line and a total you can recognize. Confirm the order. A draft quotation is not ready to invoice as a down payment.

2. Choose a down payment

Click Create Invoice. In the Create invoice(s) window, choose Down payment (percentage) or Down payment (fixed amount), enter a partial amount, and click Create Draft. If Odoo reports an invalid operation, the product’s invoicing policy may require a delivery first.

3. Read both documents

The invoice amount should be the down payment, not the order total. The order should still show a balance to invoice.

4. Invoice the balance later

When you invoice the rest, the new invoice should not charge the down payment again. If the customer is billed twice, stop and credit the extra before you send it.

5. Frequently asked questions

Is a down payment the full invoice?

No. It is the part you selected. The order keeps the remainder.

Should I edit the order total instead?

No. Keep the order total and invoice the deposit from it.

What if the customer pays the deposit?

Register the payment on the down payment invoice, not on the sales order alone.
