How to connect your domain to Odoo

Visitors should open your own domain, and links in quotations should use that same address. Add the DNS record before you map the domain inside Odoo.

1. Follow Odoo’s order

Odoo’s domain documentation asks you to do the steps in this order so the certificate can validate:

  1. If you are moving an existing site, set redirects before the domain moves.
  2. Add the CNAME record at the DNS host.
  3. Redirect the naked domain to www when you want both names to work.
  4. Map the domain to the Odoo database.
  5. Map the domain to the Odoo website.

The steps below follow the Odoo 19 domain names guide. DNS screens differ by provider. The Odoo side is the same.

2. Add the CNAME record

For Odoo Online, the CNAME target is the database address created with the database, such as mycompany.odoo.com. For Odoo.sh, open the branch settings and use the address shown under custom domains.

Create the record for www first. Odoo recommends redirecting the naked domain to https://www.yourdomain.com. If the DNS host cannot redirect a naked name to HTTPS, Odoo’s guide uses Cloudflare for that redirect and tells you to leave the www record as DNS only, not proxied, when it points at Odoo.

3. Map it in Odoo and on the website

  1. Wait until the CNAME answers for www. Checking too early leads to a failed certificate.
  2. On Odoo Online, open the database manager, select the database, choose Domain Names, then Use my own domain. Enter www.yourdomain.com, verify it, and confirm.
  3. On Odoo.sh, open the branch, then Settings → Custom domains, enter the domain, and add it.
  4. In the database, open Website → Configuration → Settings, enter https://www.yourdomain.com in the domain field, and save.
  5. Open the website on the new address and sign in as an administrator once, so links in later emails use it.

Expected: the browser shows a padlock on the www address, and a new quotation link uses that host. Certificate retries can continue for several days. Any CAA record on the domain must allow Let’s Encrypt, which is the authority Odoo documents for these certificates.

4. Frequently asked questions

Can I map the naked domain and www?

Odoo’s 19.0 domain guide says an SSL certificate is not generated for a naked domain such as yourdomain.com. Use www, or redirect the naked domain to www, and map the www address.

How long does HTTPS take?

Odoo says certificate generation may take up to 24 hours, with further attempts over five days. Mapping the domain before the CNAME record exists is a common cause of a name-mismatch warning.

Does this change links inside emails?

Mapping the domain to the website and signing in on that domain updates the database base URL, which quotations and portal links use. You can freeze that URL with the system parameter web.base.url.freeze if an administrator must still sign in on the old address.
